Founded in late 1993, the Surrounders is a canadian demo group based
in Sherbrooke, Quebec. Our releases consisted of songs until NAID 1995 where
we presented our first demo. Most of the original members of the group are
still with us.
We have aquired a reputation as being mysterious. This is somewhat
true; at NAID 1995, we've been confined to our headquarters all week-end
long to finish Dark Purpose and there was a huge barrier preventing some
of us from communicating: the language. With the exception of Integris, we
are all pure french canadians, so our native tongue is obviously not english.
We do not release a lot of stuff anymore. Thus, it is almost 100%
certain that our NAID 1996 demo has been our last one. Most of us have
finished our studies and, frankly, working full time on a computer *can* be
lucrative if you're coding in Delphi or SQL rather than in assembler. You
must understand what I mean. Demo coding is a hobby which costs way too much
time (and coffee) nowadays and I think that it's about time we retire from
demos, unless of course we find some fresh new souls to replace us with the
coding - which I doubt.
Demo groups used to form themselves on bulletin boards. This is how
it worked for us. The problem is that boards are now obsolete: the net is
suddenly the one and only cool place around. Therefore, I notice that demo
groups are starting to have members all around the world and I just can't
imagine all the trouble it must be to design and code a demo when you're not
able to meet the other members. It has been done, but at what cost?
Enough of this crap, read on.
